Frequently Asked Questions
How is U-Impact different from other Ulula products?
U-Impact is a standardized questionnaire that is not customizable, differentiating it from Ulula surveys which can be tailored to the client’s needs. Ulula surveys can be co-created with the client to create a question set that covers a unique set of key performance indicators (KPIs) based on client needs and context. U-Impact, on the other hand, comprises a series of questions across a range of fixed key indicator categories including health and safety, wages and hours, freedoms and wellbeing. The standardized nature of U-Impact enables a more efficient program roll-out that is scalable across the supply chain.
What’s the difference between U-Impact and U-Analytics?
The U-Impact subscription includes survey deployment capabilities and basic data analytics for individual monitored workplaces. A single U-Impact subscription covers survey deployment and data collection at a single workplace.
The U-Analytics subscription enables users to access results from multiple workplaces and to build a portfolio of companies using U-Impact to monitor their workplaces, but does not include survey deployment capabilities.
The U-Analytics subscription can be bundled with the U-Impact Subscription to ensure access to specific workplaces that are not already part of the U-Impact network. In this case, you can purchase U-Impact subscriptions in bulk and allocate them to your suppliers, subsidiaries or workplaces within the platform (in other words, sponsor them). The U-Analytics subscription can be purchased alone if you intend to request data viewing access of other companies, subsidiaries, suppliers, or workplaces that you know are already registered on U-Impact.
What is the survey methodology?
U-Impact surveys include questions on a range of worker well being KPIs and have been informed by guidelines such as the SMETA Code, BCI, SA 8000, FLA benchmarks. Workers enroll in the U-Impact program by downloading the app and consenting to participate. They receive monthly surveys with a random sample of questions from the various wellbeing and compliance indicators which they answer to completion for a chance to receive a reward. After 3 cycles of monthly surveys, the workers will have answered all the questions in the set, providing data across all measured KPI categories. In total, workers will answer each question 4 times throughout the duration of the program, enabling clients to measure continuous improvement.
Are U-Impact surveys anonymous?
Yes. All responses to U-Impact surveys are anonymous. Ulula does not store personal data of workers. When distributing incentives to reward participation, Ulula requests phone numbers to identify where rewards should be sent but does not store phone numbers in the database.
How do we get workers to participate?
Ulula offers workers a chance to win rewards for participation in the U-Impact surveys. Participants who complete all questions in a month are eligible. The system will draw winners from the pool of participants and then invite them to share the phone number where the incentives should be sent. We do not store participant phone numbers or personal identification information to protect worker privacy and preserve anonymity.
Are the survey questions customizable?
No. U-Impact is a standardized questionnaire that does not allow customization. The assessment has been designed to create a comprehensive overview of working conditions and worker wellbeing. It comprises a series of questions across a range of key indicator categories including health and safety, wages & hours, freedoms and wellbeing. Survey questions are aligned with key social standards — from SMETA to BsCI and from SA8000 to Fair trade — and are based on over 8 years of experience engaging workers, running focus groups to understand how to ask clear and meaningful questions and working alongside major standards.
Can I use my own questions in combination with Ulula Impact?
U-Impact is a standardized questionnaire that does not allow customization. However, Ulula offers an opportunity to create more in-depth thematic surveys (ie. gender-based violence, harassment, living wage) with questions from Ulula’s Question Bank or by co-creating questions with clients for an additional fee.
What kind of data do these plans give me access to?
The U-Impact subscription provides survey data for each of your monitored workplaces on an interactive dashboard with capabilities to filter by demographics and KPIs. You can also download a PDF report of your aggregated or filtered performance data on demand.
The U-Analytics subscription provides aggregated performance data for all workplaces where a U-Impact subscription is active, as well as the additional capability of comparing performance between workplaces for benchmarking. You can interact with your performance data through demographic, region, sector and KPI filters. You can also download a PDF report of your aggregated or filtered performance data on demand.
Is data sharing possible?
Yes. The platform enables data sharing in a few ways. You can download a PDF report from the Dashboard module which summarizes participation, demographics and KPI performance results into a single document to share with your colleagues or external stakeholders. You can also invite other companies to join the U-Impact network, such as your suppliers, subsidiaries or workplaces and request to view their data. If you know of companies that are already registered on the platform, you can send them a data viewing request directly.
How does pricing work for landscape (also called jurisdictional or area-based) projects?
A landscape refers to an ad hoc group that is not defined by a defined workplace. It can include various communities living near a mine; smallholders in a producing region. The landscape license applies typically to larger groups of individuals that are not connected through a single workplace. The licensing model is calculated based on the number of workers covered by the license and the number of landscapes. To learn more about pricing for landscape projects, contact our sales team.
Can I buy subscriptions on behalf of my suppliers?
Yes, you can sponsor companies, such as your suppliers, subsidiaries or workplaces, to join the U-Impact network by purchasing U-Impact subscriptions in bulk and allocating them to your invitees in the Invitations module within the platform.
What kind of support does Ulula provide to ensure success?
Included in the subscription is a robust library of multilingual resources to support a successful program roll-out including deployment guides, promotional materials, worker-facing posters, onboarding checklists, program speaking points and more. Ulula also offers tailored webinars for specific company’s suppliers, dedicated account management, in-person ground-level support, virtual training, data experts to support results interpretation, CAP development support, and custom software development (e.g. API integration) for an additional fee. If an app-based channel isn’t suitable for the targeted stakeholders, additional channels (such as IVR, SMS, WhatsApp) can be provided. Contact our sales team to learn more about program add-ons.
